Humanities

Picture

Mexican White Boy & American Born Chinese

These were the first books we read in this class. They are focusing on race and racial stereotypes and how they effect our world and other communities. These also show how these characters have grown up with this hate in their world and community.

The Cycle of Socialization Gender Poster

This is showing the cycle of gender socialization for women. Its how I as a girl was brought up and stereotypes that people used for me.

Looking Glass self meme

On this project we had to make a meme on the way our family see us. It made me think about the identity I have with my family and the identity I have with my friends.

Socialization and Identity Project

Picture
Mask brainstorm
My idea for my mask was that my identity has layers and this mask shows a new layer once you get know me more. The first layer is my name, gender, preferred pronouns, title (teenager), and age. The second layer is things you find out after you know me better like hobbies, and personality. Third layer is something you don't know until you know the person pretty well, religion, origin, and family. Finally the forth layer is things you find out after you know this person really well, insecurities, fears and tragedy. Although my mask didn't end up as I planned the way I started helped me get to my idea that ended up going with.

Artist Statement
My mask is symbolizing the false positive and the true negative side of socialization. Half of it is the true side of socialization and the other side is how we are expected to see socialization. On the true side of socialization we have a black eye with black tears streaming from it showing the hate that you can get. We also have a tape over the mouth showing that we need to stay part of the stereotypes and the box we are expected to stay in. On the fake side of socialization is what we are expected to see in socialization. The candy wrappers, bright light and sparkly glitter  are almost showing an utopian atmosphere. Everything is expected to be perfect; there are no problems in the world.

 Thesis Statement
“We are then socialized by powerful sources in our world to play the roles prescribed by an inequitable social system,” said Bobbie Harro. Being socialized can affect us in so many different ways. It turns us into the people we are today. We are taught to act a certain way depending on what our age, gender or sexuality is through socialization. Socialization is
the process of learning to behave in a way that is acceptable to society (Harro). We are told what to think and what not to think by those around us. We have a metaphorical dictator, socialization, in our society telling us how to act and where we belong. Due to this we are all just followers.  Society is a controlling environment through the media, government and our community that not many people are able to break out of because we are living in a social dictatorship where if you go against society you are considered a “ rule breaker” or “misfit” (Harro)

Project Reflection

I learned a lot in this project. I learned about socialization, stereotypes, target and agent groups. I also feel like a learned more about myself and a passion I have for sociology. I wouldn't change anything about this project and how I got complete creative freedom. But if I had to change something I would add more glitter. The 3 main takeaways I had were that everything we do has an impact on somebody, the media has a horrible affect on people and, stereotypes can change somebody's view on life and make them stay in a box.  A challenging part of this project for me was finding a way to put all my emotions into one work of art.
